INTERIORS I Mallorca

In the heart of the town of Felanitx, on Mallorca's eastern coast, a historic residence of more than 600 square metres has been brought back to life after standing empty for four decades. Through the creative vision of Danish designer Malene Birger, the building has been transformed into a home, studio and gallery—an eloquent demonstration of how an interior can become a total work of art, balancing discipline, memory and contemporary sensibility. Begun in 2022 and completed in 2024, the renovation was an ambitious undertaking that combined careful restoration with thoughtful reinterpretation. Rather than simply restoring the old palacio to its former splendour, Birger set out to give it an entirely new sense of life.

Within the historic palacio in Felanitx, the Danish designer has created a home that embodies the balance between tradition and modernity. Filled with light and quiet refinement, the interiors combine natural materials, clean lines and her own artworks to define an aesthetic of restraint, where minimalism becomes Mediterranean poetry.

The original architectural character has been carefully preserved, from the noble proportions and soaring ceilings to the arches and richly textured walls, while being reinterpreted through a visual language that brings together Nordic restraint and Mediterranean warmth. The interiors unfold as a sequence of generous, light-filled spaces, where a palette of soft neutrals—white, sand and warm grey—enhances the prevailing sense of calm. Each room is composed through subtle contrasts: matte plaster walls meet sculptural furniture, natural stone flooring is paired with handcrafted rugs woven from natural fibres, while vintage Italian pieces sit comfortably alongside contemporary furniture defined by clean, confident lines.

Renowned for her monochromatic and graphic aesthetic, Birger composes an interior that celebrates quietness. Nothing feels superfluous; every object has been carefully considered so that neither architecture nor light is ever overshadowed. A ceramic vessel, an industrial light fixture or an abstract painting each becomes a moment of contemplation. Her restrained aesthetic is defined by the tension between stillness and movement, between the disciplined clarity of Scandinavian design and the sensual freedom of the Mediterranean.

The house also incorporates a personal gallery where Birger displays her own paintings, collages, sculptures and ceramics, seamlessly integrated into the living environment. The house becomes an extension of her creative universe, where art and everyday life coexist naturally. Contemporary design pieces sit alongside locally crafted objects, while natural materials—timber, stone and wrought iron—are softened by organic textiles, creating an interior of quiet, enduring elegance.
